ABSTRACT
Currently, gingival and periodontal diseases are bacterial infections are a major concern in dentistry. Treatment to halt the progression of these diseases involves subgingival mechanical debridement and establishing an environment for bacteria compatible with gingival health. It is believed that most of the causes and factors contributing in the etiology of the disease may be reduced and treated by applying ozone in its different forms (gas, water, oil). Ozone therapy has become an adjuvant element in the control and treatment of infections in areas such as surgery, dermatology, cosmetics and also in dentistry, as it has been studied for years in industry and medicine because it is an antimicrobial agent highly effective against various microorganisms. The aim of this study is to review the literature on the effects of ozone infiltrated in nonsurgical periodontal treatment, presenting and discussing biological actions, advantages, objectives, contraindications and its various uses in dentistry.
