RESUMEN
En la actualidad, las enfermedades gingivales y periodontales son infecciones bacterianas que representan una gran preocupación en odontología. El tratamiento para detener el progreso de estas patologías implica el desbridamiento mecánico subgingival y el establecimiento de un entorno para las bacterias compatibles con la salud gingival. Se cree que la mayoría de las causas y los factores que contribuyen a la etiología de la enfermedad podrían reducirse y tratarse con la aplicación de ozono en diferentes formas (gas, agua, aceite). La ozonoterapia se ha convertido en un elemento adyuvante en el control y tratamiento de infecciones en campos como la cirugía, dermatología, cosmética y también en odontología, ya que ha sido examinado durante años en la industria y la medicina, por ser un agente antimicrobiano altamente eficaz ante diferentes microorganismos. El objetivo del presente estudio es revisar la bibliografía médica sobre los efectos del ozono infiltrado en el tratamiento periodontal no quirúrgico, presentándose y discutiéndose acciones biológicas, ventajas, objetivos, contraindicaciones y sus diferentes usos en odontología.
