ABSTRACT
Objectives: To determine the behavior of markers of oxidative stress and genotoxicity in occupationally exposed individuals, for prolonged periods, to lead.
Method: There were studied a total of 57 subjects, of them 27 workers aged between 35 and 64, exposed to lead for periods of 8-44 years. The control group consisted of 30 individuals, aged between 36 and 65 years, with no occupational exposure to chemical or physical agents. All participants were included in the study after signing informed consent form. Markers of oxidative damage and antioxidant defense were measured by spectrophotometric methods. Moreover, the DNA damage was determined by Comet assay.
Results: In the exposed workers observed a significant increase in plasma concentration of total peroxides. On the other hand, they showed a significant decrease in the activity of glutathione reductase.
Conclusions: The results of this study will allow the use of markers for monitoring effect of workers exposed to lead.
