ABSTRACT
Cancer is a disease in which genes, proteins, enzymes and signaling molecules are involved in cell replication. This review discusses some aspects of breast cancer, with emphasis on ductal carcinoma
in situ as it is the highest in frequency in the population of the world and in Mexico. This cancer increases the risk of contralateral invasive cancer and mastectomies four to five times. Another positive predictor is BRCA mutation in the development of breast cancer and first-degree relation to ovarian cancer (p ‹ 0.0278) and mastectomies (p ‹ 0.0001). Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy is a clinical strategy in the control of breast cancer, in association with hormone therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Although breast cancer can occur at younger ages and in the last stage of life, the age group with the highest incidence is between 40 and 60 years old.
