ABSTRACT
Introduction: Nowadays stroke is a public
health problem with consequences that include
physical, cognitive, and emotional difficulties that
impact the patients’ quality of life in the short- and
long-term.
Objective: To describe the quality of life of stroke
patients from Ibague, Colombia, three months
post-injury.
Methods: Forty patients with stroke and forty
unaffected age-, education-, and gender-matched
control participants were recruited. All participants
completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, and
The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36).
Results: Significant differences were found
between healthy and stroke participants in all
subscale of SF-36, with patients obtaining lower
scores on Physical Functioning, Role-Physical,
Bodily pain, General Health, Vitality, Social
Functioning, Role-Emotional and Mental Health.
Conclusions: Patients with stroke presented
poorer quality of life on all subscales of SF-36
three months post-injury compared with healthy
controls. This finding underscores the importance
of implementing treatment and support programs
during the initial three months post-stroke in order
to facilitate social, family, and labor reintegration
of affected individuals.
