ABSTRACT
Objective. In two groups of patients (with and without lidocaine) that were to have laryngoscopic intubation, to compare secondary sympathetic responses, immediately after intubation, and five and ten minutes later.
Design. Prospective, longitudinal, comparative and experimental.
Material and Methods. Patients between two and 16 years of age who underwent general anesthesia. Two groups were formed by randomization, each with 35 patients. In Group I: intravenous lidocaine was administered at a 1.5 mg/kg dose, 3 minutes before laringoscopy and intubation; the other group received placebo in the same dose and under the same circumstances. For this study, we measured heart rate, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, in four occasions: before intubation, immediately after intubation; and 5, and 10 minutes later. Statistical tests were two-tailed with an α=0.05.
Results. No statistically significant differences were detected between both groups in any of the four mentioned moments.
Discussion. No significant secondary sympathetic responses to intubation were detected when intravenous lidocaine was administered.
