ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe how we establish guidelines for patients’ selection, elective surgical technique, morbidity control and predictive clinical and esthetic result, according to our personal experience in varicose veins Day surgery.
Method: We selected patients who were operated on their varicose veins between 2001 and 2004 for this study, under several indications and employing various surgical and anesthetic guidelines.
Results: 73 operations were performed; 54 of them on women and 19 on men. Primary varicose veins (67%), residual veins (8%) and recurrent varicose veins (25%). Under regional anesthesia (14%), loco-regional (14%), intravenous (17%) or local anesthesia (55%). Lower extremities, 90 in total, were treated : 10 saphenous trunk stripping, 29 discissions of perforating veins, 19 phlebectomies and 23 combinations of discission and phlebectomy. Neither readmission nor analgesia problems were recorded. Each complication was slight and the majority was linked to healing’s pathology or small hematomas which were resolved by conservative treatment.
Conclusions: The varicose veins treatment must be assessed by Doppler ultrasound, individualized and performed through Day surgery. The knowledge and perfect combination of different techniques allow us to relieve the symptoms of venous insufficiency, to minimize the operative risk and to obtain a esthetic phlebology.
