ABSTRACT
Although an estimated 60% of the population has variants in the arterial circle of Willis, magnetic resonance angiography is not included routinely in magnetic resonance studies of the head.
Objective: show the usefulness of nuclear magnetic angioresonance in detecting variants of the arterial circle of Willis.
Material and methods: 3D TOF (three-dimensional time-of-flight) sequence nuclear magnetic angioresonances were taken in 650 patients with indication of magnetic resonance of the head for various reasons.
Results: arterial circles of Willis could be evaluated in 602 of 650 patients, between 0 and 95 years of age; 253 (42%) had at least one anatomical variant: 175 (69%) in the posterior system, 30 (12%) in the anterior, and 29 (11%) in both and 19 (8%) had variants in other blood vessels.
Conclusions: complementary nuclear magnetic angioresonance in patients undergoing magnetic resonance of the head helps to detect uncommon variants of the arterial circle of Willis associated with risk of stroke. We suggest performing nuclear magnetic angioresonance on all patients undergoing magnetic resonance of the head.
