ABSTRACT
Tuberculosis (TB) has a high rate of morbidity and accounts for approximately 3 million yearly deaths.
M. tuberculosis infection studies have revealed the presence of determining environmental and genetic factors in the pathophysiology of TB. Some genes localized within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), such as systems HLA and TNF-α among others have been associated to TB susceptibility in various ethnic groups. In the Mexican population, susceptibility to pulmonary TB is determined by the alleles HLA-DRBI 1501, HLA-DQAI 0101 and DQBI 0501. On the other hand, mutations in the IFN-g receptor 1 gene have been associated with lack of defense to mycobacterium infection. Furthermore, the receptor gene for vitamin D, the NRAMP-1 gene or the macrophage chemotactic protein gene (MCP-1) also seem to be related to genetic susceptibility or resistance to TB. Polymorphic genetic marker studies in TB are important to define the mechanisms of susceptibility to infection and of the clinical course of the disease.
