Improvement of egg shell quality with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25-(oh)D3] addition in both young and old layer hens

ABSTRACT
In order to determine if the addition of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25-(OH)D3] to layer diets improves egg shell quality, two experiments with both young and molted Isa Babcock B-300 layers were performed. A completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement was used in both experiments. Treatments were as follows: Experiment 1 included: 1. High calcium level diet; 2. Like 1 plus 69 mg of pure 25-(OH)D3 (equivalent to 2 000 000 UI of vitamin D3) per ton; 3. Low calcium level diet and 4. Like 3 plus 69 mg of pure 25-(OH)D3 per ton. Sorghum + soybean meal diets were employed for all treatments, and those with high calcium levels contained 3.75% calcium, 0.4% of available phosphorus (AP) and 16% of crude protein (CP), whereas low calcium level diets contained 4.1% calcium, 0.3% AP and 16% CP. In Experiment 2, high calcium level diets contained 3.75% calcium, 0.3% AP and 15% CP, whereas low calcium levels contained: 3.25% calcium, 0.25% AP and 15% CP. Results from Experiment 1 after 10 weeks showed significant differences among treatments (P ‹ 0.05) in egg production and egg mass for low calcium diets. Egg shell thickness was better (P ‹ 0.05) when 25-(OH)D3 was added to the diet. Results from Experiment 2 after 10 weeks indicated that egg shell thickness was better (P ‹ 0.05) when 25-(OH)D3 was added. This information shows that when 25-hydroxycholecalciferol is added to diets containing vitamin D3 on Isa Babcock B-300 layers and molted hen diets, egg shell quality is improved.
