ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the risk factors associated with peripheral vascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Material and methods: A transverse analytical study was carried out between October and November, 2000 in patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients who had been suffering from the disease for at least one year and gave written consent to participate in the study. An evaluation of signs and symptoms related to peripheral vascular disease in the lower extremities was undertaken. Two groups were defined: Group A included those patients showing 4 or more signs or symptoms; Group B included patients with 3 or less signs or symptoms. At the same time, certain risk characteristics were evaluated such as gender, age, body mass index and time of disease onset.
Results: Of the total patient population, 46% were placed in Group A and 54% in Group B. Significant differences seen in Group A compared with Group B were: older in age (p = 0.0003); greater time since disease onset (p 0.01) and lesser purification of creatinine (p = 0.008). Other differences were not statistically significant.
Conclusions: Peripheral vascular disease is frequent and can be related to inherent characteristics of the patient and his/her disease.
