ABSTRACT
Introduction: This research was conducted in 2007. The lack of research in Spanish-speaking patients with CP (cleft palate) with surgical treatment and of Spanish literature documenting the presence of all the typical CP articulatory patterns observed in other languages raised the following questions: Are all these patterns present in the speech of Spanish-speaking patients? What are the most frequent cleft-type characteristics (CTCs)?
Objectives: To estimate the frequency distribution of all CTCs present in Spanish-speaking individuals with repaired cleft palate.
Material and methods: We analized the data on the production of consonant phonemes of Spanish according to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) extracted from 67 clinical histories of patients who were evaluated using lists of syllables, words, phrases and spontaneous speech, and classified it according to the categories of the GOS.SP.ASS’98 (Great Ormond Street Speech Assessment) UK protocol.
Results: All the articulatory patterns studied were found. The anterior oral CTC was the most prevalent, appearing in 40 cases (59.7%). Within it, the lateralization was the most common, present in 28 cases (41.8%). However, the most noted productions were glottal articulation (glottal stop, laryngeal fricative and glottal reinforcement), belonging to the non-oral CTCs, and weak/nasalized consonants, belonging to the passive CTCs, 30 cases (both with 44.8%).
Conclusions: In the population studied, all the articulatory patterns listed in the GOS.SP.ASS’98 protocol were found, being the anterior oral CTCs group the one with the highest prevalence and the glottal articulation and weak/nasalized consonants the most frequent patterns.
