ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to evaluate the productive and reproductive performance of two groups of 3-breed crossbred goats with 50% Alpine, 25% Nubian and 25% Native (AND); and 50% Nubian, 25% Alpine and 25% Native (NAD), that were kept under confinement conditions in the Venezuelan dry tropics. Milk production (MP), lactation length (LL), prolificacy (P), kidding interval (KI) and gestation length (GL) were analyzed using a linear mixed model that included the effects of each genetic group (AND, NAD). Goats nested within genetic group, kidding number (1-5), kidding year (1990-1995) and kidding season (dry, rainy). Overall means were: 126.3 ± 62.3 kg for MP, 197.5 ± 75.6 days for LL, 1.21 ± 0.4 kids/parturition for P, 441.4 ± 121.4 days for KI and 149.2 ± 3.1 days for GL. A significant effect (P ‹ 0.05, P ‹ 0.01) of the genetic group was found on all of the variables studied, except on lactation length. Least-squares means for AND and NAD for MP, LL, P, KI and GL were: 132.7 ± 13.2 and 96.6 ± 17.1 kg, 1.32 ± 0.06 and 1.03 ± 0.08 kids/parturition, 439.4 ± 36.0 and 382.0 ± 43.5 days, and 149.4 ± 0.59 and 147.7 ± 0.83 days, respectively. Kidding year had a significant effect (P ‹ 0.01) on all of the variables, except on prolificacy. Kidding number affected (P ‹ 0.01) both the kidding interval and the gestation length. It is concluded that the AND group had a superior performance than the NAD one under environmental and management conditions of the Venezuelan dry tropics.REFERENCES
