Ferguson angle measurement comparison between upright position and decubitus

ABSTRACT
Background: Low back pain is a frequent syndrome, related to posture anomalies, prolonged positions and weight increment. If low back pain does not respond to medical treatment, radiographic studies are required; one of the parameters of measurement is the Ferguson lumbosacral angle (FA).
Objective: To determine in an observational and descriptive study the FA in the upright position in comparison with the same angle measurement in the decubitus position in patients with mechanical-postural low back pain.
Material and methods: A sample of 130 patients of both sexes was selected with a non-probabilistic, consecutive and convenience method; in them, measurements of the FA were performed both in lumbosacral lateral radiographic plate for the upright position and in magnetic resonance pondered in T2 for the decubitus position.
Results: Global measurements of the 130 patients reported X¯± SD of 35.6 ± 7.8
o in upright position; magnetic resonance showed X¯± SD of 36.5 ± 7.9
o for decubitus position, without statistical significance differences, even when the sample was divided by sex.
Conclusions: In the sample studied, there were not statistical significance differences (p › 0.05) of the Ferguson angle in either the upright or decubitus positions.
