ABSTRACT
The burnout syndrome is the response to chronic job stress, composed of negative attitudes and feelings. Considered work risk. Worldwide prevalence, between 22-60% by specialists; and between 47-76% in medical residents. In Mexico the prevalence is 44%. The purpose of the work is to investigate the presence of the syndrome, as it impacts on the working relationship between medical staff, physician-patient relationship, and the physician’s health.
Material and methods: Cross-sectional, observational, prospective study. Angeles Group Hospital’s residents, from September 2012 to March 2013. Registry of demographic and personal data. Application of Maslach burnout inventory (MBI) scale. Statistical analysis with program SPSS, version 20.0.
Results: From the total 136 medical residents, 72.05% had Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization in 52.93% and low personal fulfillment at 53.67%. The syndrome is most frequently found in Internal Medicine residents.
Conclusions: More than 50% of Angeles Group residents suffer from moderate to severe intensity of burnout syndrome. We suggest the implementation of a program of physical activity and recreation, and offer performance incentives through academic courses.
