ABSTRACT
Objective. This retrospective series has been reviewed for an evaluation of a five-year term follow-up of patients who were treated in our hospital because of chondrosarcoma, which is a chemotherapy and radiotherapy non-sensitive and less frequent malignant bone tumor than osteosarcoma and the Ewing’s. Material and methods. A series of 16 patients who were admitted from 1991 through 1997, is reported here as they accomplished evaluation criteria for pre and post-operative history, complications and for a minimum of five years survival. Sex ratio was 1:1 (8 men and 8 women). Age average was 30.5 years (14 to 64). More frequently affected bone was humerus in 8 cases (50%) in 5 men and 3 women, followed by femur in 4 cases (25%) in 1 men and 3 women. Preoperative span between first symptoms and surgery was 8.7 years for men and 7.3 years for women. Routine treatment included en blocq resection of tumor in 13 cases, marginal resection in 2 and amputation in one. Results. Only one patient has died after five years. Patient was a 64 years-old male, who had a scapula chondrosarcoma for 10 years before surgery. Metastasis appeared 4 years after surgery and patient died. Three more still alive cases had relapsing tumor at closing time and 12 were alive and tumor free. Conclusion. Results had no relationship neither to age, nor time span before surgery or hystological degree of malignancy. En blocq resection seems to address the best mid-term results.
