ABSTRACT
Introduction. Cementation is widely accepted procedure for standard total hip replacement in order to face the early stress-shielding which the hip is beared. Material and methods. Cementation was reinforced by four 6.5 spongial screws inserted to the acetabulum, so the prominent free head of screws allowed a sound anchorage of cement instead of penetrating in drill holes into the acetabulum. Sixteen hips were treated in 16 patients (10 male and 6 females), with an age average of 76 years. Follow-up was for 32 months. Results. According to the Merle D’Aubigné evaluation scale, standard good results were obtained at closing time. Conclusion. In spite of relatively short post-operative period, a reliable resistance has been obtained by the anchorage of cement by screw since it is realized that a significant reduction on stress-shielding forces is ensured.
