ABSTRACT
Introduction: the occlusion includes not only teeth interdigitation but also the relation between those and the surrounding soft and hard tissue. The treatments with functional orthopedics intervene directly activating or inhibiting facial muscles, playing this way a preponderant paper in the facial aesthetics. Objective: to describe the lip's modifications in class II division 1 patients treated with type A Bimler's elastic appliance.
Material and Methods: an observational descriptive study, of retrospective type. The study sample was formed by 33 class II division 1 syndrome patients treated with type A Bimler's elastic appliance during 1980-1997, and whose clinical records were donated to the Orthodontic Department by Dr. Bimler. In each case cephalometric measures were taken before and after treatment following the soft tissue cephalogram described by Holdaway.
Results: the upper lip groove depths in both sexes increased its longitude, from 1,44 mm to 1,92 mm coming closer to the ideal norm; the thickness and the tension of the upper lip increased, being the variation bigger in the feminine sex; the distance of the lower lip to the H line decreased from 0,92 mm to 0,59 mm; the distance of the lower lip groove depths to the line H diminished from 3,38 mm to a stocking 2,55 mm.
Conclusions: the treatment with type A Bimler's elastic appliance, increases the upper lip groove depths in both sexes, as well as the thickness and tension in the upper lip, meaning this an improvement of the facial aesthetics.
