ABSTRACT
Acne is one of the ten most frequent dermatoses in dermatology practice. It is very frequent in adolescents.
Classification of acne is performed for therapeutic decision. According to its severity it is classified
as mild, moderate, and severe. In patients with acne and hormone disorders a multidisciplinary endocrinological
study should be carried out. Treatment for acne is topical or systemic. Tretinoin is the drug of
choice for the treatment of non-inflammatory acne and should be used as maintenance therapy since it prevents
the formation of comedones. It is necessary to reduce the rotational use of antibiotics, topical as well as systemic,
to a minimum to prevent bacterial resistance of
P. ACNES. Combined topical treatments, especially benzoyl
peroxide with clindamycin or erithromycin, reduce bacterial resistance as well as the irritation that benzoyl
peroxide could cause. Oral isotretinoin is the therapeutic resource of excellence in cases of severe and moderate
acne that do not respond to conventional treatments.
