ABSTRACT
Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) described for the first time in 1991 by BK Wallner in Germany, is an imaging technique that uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to visualize static or very slow moving fluids that produce images of the pancreato biliary tree similar to those obtained by invasive radiological methods such as retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). It has been widely accepted to evaluate biliary tree or pancreatic duct diseases in a noninvasive way. Recent studies show that MRCP is comparable with or more useful than other techniques, such as ultrasound, CT and ERCP to study choledocholithiasis, malignant obstruction of the biliary or pancreatic ducts, congenital anomalies, and chronic pancreatitis, this method offers an excellent tissue contrast and high anatomic detail.
