Multidisciplinary achievement through complementary and alternative therapies in fibromyalgia a preliminary study

ABSTRACT
Objective: to validate a program of multidisciplinary rehabilitation through
complementary and alternative therapies in patients with fibromyalgia as part of
the ambulatory service in "Faustino Pérez Hernández" Provincial Teaching Hospital
of Rehabilitation.
Method and material: a longitudinal, prospective (test-retest)study included a
sample of 30 patients, all of them women, to whom some tests were applied; semistructured
interview, Trait-State Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Depression
Inventory (BDI), Analogic Visual Scale (AVS) and the Impact Questionnaire of
Fibromyalgia (IQF) before and after treatment. In the various therapeutics stand
the cognitive - behavioral therapy (CBT), Tui Na massage, hydrotherapy and
Oriental exercises (tai chi).
Results: in the main findings after applying the complementary and alternative
treatment it was demonstrated, significant changes found in the pain intensity
measures and the disease impact. However, the anxiety and depression measures
showed less noticeable changes.
Conclusions: the therapeutic alternative demonstrated the benefits to better the
anxiety levels, depression, pain intensity and disease impact of the patients with
fibromyalgia.
