ABSTRACT
Introduction: Patients who have received a kidney transplant are in need of, before and after the procedure, both medical and psychological attention. Although not all protocols for transplant include psychological attention, it is undeniable that this aspect must be taken into consideration for a comprehensive approach.
Objective: To learn about the most recently published research regarding psychological interventions for kidney transplant patients (before and after the procedure) through a literature review.
Method: A systematic review was performed through the electronic resources provided by the CONRICYT. Keywords in both, Spanish and English, were entered in search for manuscripts related to psychological interventions in kidney transplant patients, published between 1994 and 2014.
Results: Search produced nine relevant papers. The three papers reporting studies analyzing patients before the kidney transplant focused on prediction of adherence to treatment, quality of life and success of transplant. The six papers reporting studies post-transplant analyzed the effect of psychotherapy and the patients’ emotional status.
Discussion: Results suggest individual psychotherapy to be effective for treatment before and after transplant. The use of standardized measures allows the detection of traits and psychological conditions of patients that can well predict the success of transplant. Although kidney transplant is an option that can significantly improve the life of patients with kidney failure, it implies changes and risks that may emotionally affect the patient. Promoting the implementation of psychological interventions for kidney transplant patients is an important task, and must parallel to the development of research providing evidence of their efficacy. Psychological intervention, for assessment and treatment, can be of benefit for the patients and for the success of the transplant.
