ABSTRACT

A descriptive transversal cut study of the congenital defects ultrasonographic prenatal diagnosis program in the Granma province corresponding to the period 2008-2011 was carried out. All pregnant women evaluated in the 13 municipalities of the province, as well as data from the Cuban Registry of Congenital Malformations were included, also evaluating the reports on pregnancy interruptions due to congenital defects. The following variables were studied: ultrasound coverage, positive cases in the first and second trimester and diagnosed pathologies, as well as other ones. The specificity, sensitivity, predictive values, proportions and percentages were computed. The study showed that program coverage in the first trimester equaled 92,8 %, while in the second trimester it increased to 99,1 %. The sensitivity value of the diagnostic test varied between 64,4 % and 77 %, and 100 % specificity, with cardiopathies being the most common congenital defects. It was concluded that the program provided positive results in the analyzed period.
