ABSTRACT
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and serious condition. The lack of early biomarkers of structural AKI has hamped our ability to translate promising therapies to human AKI. Neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL), is the most promising novel AKI biomarkers. NGAL was originally identified as a novel protein isolated from secondary granules of human neutrophils. It is a 25 kDa protein covalently bound to neutrophil gelatinase. NGAL is a useful early AKI biomarker in the urine and plasma that predicts development and evolution of AKI, even in heterogenous group of patients. The aim of this paper is to review recent advances in diagnosis of AKI using NGAL.
