Educational participation strategy of parents with Down syndrome offspring aimed at developing self-support

ABSTRACT
Down syndrome is the most frequent genetic disease due to
a chromosomic aberration. However, there is a real lack of information in the family regarding important facts related with the development of their offspring, like it is the case of self-support. An educational strategy with a before-after design was applied in 2009 to the fathers and/or mothers of Down syndrome children registered in the “Zunzún” Special Day Care Center in Havana City, in order to explore the knowledge they had regarding the development of self-support in their offspring. The study was carried out in 3 stages with the application of 4 workshops. Before the workshops the parents and/or mothers recognized not to have the necessary information on the children’s self-support and disabilities. All children showed up difficulties in the method of acquisition of abilities that they could have
developed in spite of their disabilities. Workshops had a
positive impact on the knowledge of parents, the possibilities of children and in their future social integration.
