ABSTRACT
Introduction: There are many factors that determine the early abandonment of breastfeeding.
Objectives: Identify factors that influence the maintenance of breastfeeding during the first three months; and the comparation the degree of weight gain in infants.
Material and methods: Using a prospective cohort, were recruited mothers and their newborns admitted to nursery. We investigated the type of feeding at birth and at three months, the reasons for abandoning the exclusive womb through a telephone survey.
Results: A total of 140 mothers of 551, 25.4% overall response. The average maternal age was 32.5 years 38 weeks gestational age. Of the cohort, 44.3% were primiparous and 97.9% with undergraduate degree. Progressed with no morbidity during pregnancy 110 mothers and over 50% received advice on breastfeeding during antenatal care and hospital stay. At discharge, 51 (36.4%) pairs had exclusive maternal breast (36.4%), 77 mixed feeding (55%) mothers and exclusive formula 12 (8.6%) pairs. Three months later, only 14 (10%) were exclusively breast fed. The main reasons for discontinuation were perceived milk production decreased in 29 (20.7%) cases and, employment status and cracked nipples 19 (13.6%) of the mothers. The only factor that favoring the maintenance of exclusive womb was the beginning of this from birth OR 22 (3.05-168.4). Regarding the growth pattern of infants duringthe first three months was similar between the groups: exclusive maternal breath, mixed feeding, and exclusive formula.
Conclusions: The factor that favors the maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first three months is the beginning of this practice from birth.
