ABSTRACT
Introduction: the obstetric brachial palsy are presented in dystocia, occurs by mechanical injury of the brachial plexus, usually unilateral and are common cause between the peripheral nervous system disorders.
Objective: to determine the functional level of the lesion, the motor roots affected, severity of injury, and changes related to electromyographic findings.
Material and Methods: we evaluated 20 patients aged 1 to 15 months, through studies of electromyography and nerve conduction in the affected limb and the limb comparatively healthy.
Results: in exploring the muscles innervated by the brachial plexus, the most frequent injury is of the upper trunk (C5-C6 roots and occasionally C7) with varying degrees of severity and neurophysiological studies are associated with functional recovery and prognosis.
Conclusions: we believe that the indication and early evaluation of the neurophysiological studies may influence the clinical standards or irreversible condition of motor sequelae in patients, when reliable studies to determine diagnosis and physical therapy and surgical.
