ABSTRACT
Objective: to analyze the relation between the densities of stones, measures in HU by means of SCAT and the results of treatment with ESWL.
Methods: between January and June, 2008, a total of 163 consecutive SCAT were carried out in adult patients presenting with UL, SCAT was carried out in a tomography (Somathom Plus, Siemesn), treated in Litotrip Store Medical AG machine, model SLX-MX-KSU. Two groups were created according the lithiasis surface; each was divided into 4 groups according the density and was related to therapy.
Results: most of patients had calculi with densities between › 800 ‹ = 1 200 HU, there was not difference among injuries and density; energy shows a trend to increase according to an increase of density. In the 2 cm
2 calculi, only there were miNo.r complications resolved with No.n-surgical treatment. In calculi greater than 2 cm
2 complications were present with all the minor densities 26.25 % and greater 15.00 %. There was a therapeutical success in the 100 % of 2 cm
2 calculi. In those greater than this diameter the success r ate was of 82.50 %.
Conclusions: authors suggest that patients with a calculus greater than 2 cm
2 and a density of more than 800 HU, must be treated by other techniques, based on that probability of failure after ESWL be higher than 17.50 %. Patients presenting with calculi in renal pelvis of 2 cm
2 are the ideal candidates for a possible and successful ESWL.
