ABSTRACT
Obesity is a condition characterized by disproportionate accumulation of body fat, and it is associated with non-transmissible, chronic disease occupying a primordial role in morbidity and mortality of the populations. Several risk factors for development of obesity were identified in children younger than 5 years living in San Luis county, Santiago de Cuba (Santiago, Cuba) by means of an analytical
study of the case-control type. Boys and girls surveyed in this study were selected from those included in a local growth and development inquiry previously conducted, and the
controls:cases ratio was 2:1. The behavior of the risk factor was described by means of oddsratios and attributed risk in those exposed. Artificial lactation, obesity family backgrounds, inadequate treatment of physiological anorexia,
and precocious inception (and incorrect conduction) of complementary feeding constituted risk factors for the development of obesity in boys and girls younger than 5 years of age.
