ABSTRACT
Introduction: in the last years a remarkable increase of the incidence of affective disorders has been experienced in our country, not only in the attention to hospitalized patients but in the attention to the outpatients as well.
Objective: to determine the frequency of affective disorders in adolescent students of Plastic Arts, identifying disorder types, family records of these or other mental disorders, as well as the possible relation between this entity and the result of the integral assessment of the affected students.
Methods: It was carried out a transverse descriptive study, taking like universe a group of adolescent students of Plastic Arts of the regular daily course of San Alejandro School from Havana. Classification approaches for affective disorders of DSM-IV were used. The sample was constituted by 46 adolescents, after being carried out an investigation by means of the application of the diagnostic scales NR-2 and NRs-2 for Bipolar Spectrum. For clinical diagnosis it was carried out a medical interview, psychiatric social history and a psychiatric assessment.
Results: affective disorders were present in 4 students (8.7%), 3 with depressive disorder (6.6%) and 1 with mood disorders (2.2%). The frequency was greater among females with three cases (16.7% versus 3.6%). There was no relation observed between family records of affective
disorders and the presence of the disorder in adolescents although the only case with diagnostic of cyclothymic coincided to be the only case with pathological antecedent of a relative with bipolar affective disorder.
Conclusion: identified mood disorders were dysthymia and cyclothymia. Affective disorders had not a negative impact in the results of the integral school evaluation.
