ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the expressions of domestic violence in the family of schizophrenic patients.
Methodology: This is a transversal study with a sequential sample of 41 subjects (mothers of schizophrenic patients). The “Domestic Violence Woman" questionnaire was used.
Results: Emotional violence was observed in all its magnitude: abusive expectation; hostility; devaluation; intimidation, and aggression. Physical violence was manifested in all of its varieties in > 43% at some time during life. Frequency was low in the previous year. Sexual violence was observed in one half of interviewed women being managed and/or forced to have sexual relations against their will. It was observed that the majority were dysfunctional families with poor functioning or over-involvement among family members.
Conclusions: Intrafamiliar violence could be potentialized with presence of a mental patient due to the way in which the symptoms affected their personal relations and on the other hand, due to imbalance between cost and benefits of the illness, and myths and belies in which violence could appear as a way to confront disappointment, stigma, and rejection.
To identify and approach these families, some therapeutic alternatives are proposed.
