ABSTRACT
Introduction: tooth loss as a result of dental caries and periodontal disease is more frequent in the elderly.
Objectives: to distribute patients by age and sex, and identify lesions in the oral mucosa according to the type of prosthesis, time and frequency of use.
Methods: a series of cases study was performed in 122 patients older than 60 years (37.4% of the universe), of both sexes prosthetically rehabilitated and lesions in the oral mucosa from January to June 2010 at Artemio Mastrapa Rodríguez Dental Clinic of Holguín. The sample was selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Interview and clinical examination were performed. Percentage calculation was used and results were showed in tables of simple frequency distribution. Chi–squared test was applied with 95% of significance level in EPIDAT 3.1.
Results: 56.6% of patients were in the age group between 60 - 69 years old, 52.4% were female and 47.6% male. Denture stomatitis represented 80.3% of the lesions and it affected both patients, those with total and partial denture. 49.2% of patients had prosthesis over 10 years and 65.6% used it all the time (day and night).
Conclusions: an increase of oral lesions in relation to the prosthesis time of use and the lack of rest periods was observed, prevailing the permanent use. The sub prosthetic stomatitis was the most frequent lesion in the studied sample.
