ABSTRACT
Background: The prevalence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding variceal and non-variceal in secondary hospitals in the country have not been studied thoroughly as we only have works from isolated medical centers and no multi centric studies evidencing current epidemiology in our environment.
Objective: To compare syndromic presentation of pathologies that affect upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients presenting to the emergency department of the General Hospital Dr. Rafael Pascasio Gamboa dependent SSA (MoH) in the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico.
Material and method: A descriptive diagnostic, transversal and retrospective study was done, where descriptive statistics was used with a proposition. Any patient who was admitted with upper gastrointestinal bleeding data and over 15 years were included, doing a final comparison to national prevalence reported in other national studies.
Results: A total of 83 patients, 44 men and 39 women over 15 years with clinical data of upper gastrointestinal bleeding at admission to the emergency department based on Rockall score before and after endoscopy, in 35 patients (42%) variceal disease was found, in 29 (35%) ulcer disease, in 3 (4%) esophageal trauma in 2 (%) lesions suggestive of malignancy, and 14 patients were unable to perform endoscopy.
Conclusion: The upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a common condition in our environment. The main cause is secondary to portal hypertension syndrome manifested by esophageal varices, followed by ulcer disease and erosive gastropathy derived from analysis of indicators in the study.
