ABSTRACT
Introduction:Chlorhexidine mouthwash as the most recommended chemotherapy in the treatment of gingivitis and plaque control. In other countries, is available in the form of varnish and gum, but it is necessary to explore other pharmaceutical formulations, for people with disabilities.
Objective: To compare the efficacy of pharmacological presentation of chlorhexidine chewing not swallowing tablets against chlorhexidine mouthwas in the tratment of the moderate gingivitis
Material and Methods: A double-blind controlled clinical trial in workers (n = 24) of the Faculty of Dentistry, Xalapa, Veracruz University.
Results: The age range was 30 to 50 years, men and women diagnosed with moderate gingivitis without added systemic diseases who agreed to participate in the study signed informed consent. They were instructed how to perform proper oral hygiene, then were randomized into two groups. The control group used chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash 2 times a day for 2 weeks and the experimental group received chlorhexidine gluconate tablets 2 times daily for 2 weeks. An analysis of proportions of the levels of plaque, gingivitis (Silness and Löe Plaque and Gingival Index of Löe and Silness) before administration and at 7 and 14 days after application of chlorhexidine. Side effects were determined by the number of spots on the tongue and teeth. The analysis was performed by ANOVA statistical test. The results showed a significant reduction of plaque and gingivitis on days 7 and 14 of treatment without significant differences between treatments. In the analysis of sunspot number is significantly increased at 7 and 14 days of treatment, no differences between treatments. Finally, according to the number of spots on the teeth in the analysis of interaction of significant differences between treatments with respect to gender and time.
Conclusion: The two forms of presentation of chlorhexidine are equally effective in treating gingivitis.
