ABSTRACT
Introduction: Suicide circadian cycle researchers describe more events during the day and show no coincidence between
their results along the 24 hour period. The aim of this work was to investigate the circadic variation of suicides in Chiapas,
Mexico.
Method: In the the periods 1990-1996 and 2000-2005 the time of 530 suicides was obtained and distributed in
groups of hours in order to look for variations along the day.
Results: There were more suicides during the night and still
more between 12:00 and 23:59 hours than between 18:00 and 05:59 hours. Peak numbers of suicides were founded
between 18:00 and 21:59 hours.
Conclusions: It seems to be an increased risk of suicides at the evening in this region of
Mexico. The peaks of suicides coincide with the acrophase of serotonin and cholesterol reported in the literature, so it is
hypothetised this could be the origin of increased impulsive suicide behavior at the late afternoon.
