ABSTRACT
We reviewed 2,562 cases of burn patients who were admitted to the Burn Unit of the Hospital of Traumatology «Dr. Victorio de la Fuente Narvaez» IMSS, to evaluate the effectiveness of
Abbreviate Burn Severity Index in predicting mortality, complications and hospital stay. In the present study, we found that the
Abbreviate Burn Severity Index index has an acceptable predictive value for mortality (R = 0.6659, p = 0.0067) and for each point of increase, the percentage increases 4.15%; however, there are many residual cases, where the outcome is not congruent with the prediction of the score, several with a low score, died and others with a high score, survived. Similar results were found while predicting complications, and we found no value for the prediction of hospital stay. The
Abbreviate Burn Severity Index index factors without forecasting impact in the present study were: the sex of the patient and the presence of deep burns; with moderate impact: age and the extent of burns; the greatest impact was injury caused by inhalation (OR 13.38), other factors of high impact not included in the index were: obesity (OR 8.3) and perianal lesions (OR 34.58). To give greater sensitivity, greater prognostic value and include most of the cases, the index should be modified; to exclude variables that do not have impact, give a higher score to inhalation injury, and to include the variables of high impact such as obesity, pre-existing disease and perianal lesions.
