ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the development of the patients, who were operated under great saphenous stripping
versus endovenous ablation after one year of the procedure, with Doppler ultrasound and the
description of sociodemographic features.
Background: Around 10 to 35% of the American population in the United States has some form of
cronic venous disease. The venous ulcers affect approximately 4% of the population over 65 years old.
Furthermore is a medical condition that affects 25 to 39% of the women, and 15 to 23% of the men.
Method: For this study, we collect some parameters like age, gender, pregnancies, body mass indexes,
taking percentages, standard deviation, and average. We take notes about the symptoms remaining one
year after the procedure, determined percentages, and analizing with the Chi square test.
Results: Of the 91 patients treated for venous pathology from January to December of 2007, we treated
81 legs under conventional stripping of the great saphenous vein, and 26 legs under endovenous
ablation. In the first group, 55% were women and 45% men, for the second group (endovascular ablation)
89% were women and 11% men.
Conclusion: The conventional stripping procedure continues to be the most common performed procedure
for the treatment of venous pathology. The endovenous ablation procedure is another treatment
option, and more studies are needed to define its efficacy.
