ABSTRACT
One of the first measures to improve care to reduce pain in a hospital is to determine the prevalence of this symptom and discuss the therapeutic approach undertaken. The prevalence of pain in the pediatric population is unknown.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of pain in patients served by the Algology Department at the Hospital Infantil de México «Federico Gomez».
Methodology: Using prospective, descriptive, transversal, observational and analytical study, hospitalized patients were studied from March to August 2011 with pain, evaluating the type of pain, intensity and pharmacological management employed.
Results: 1,113 patients were included. The prevalence and incidence of pain was 35.3%. Acute pain was 89.8% (n = 1,000). Nociceptive pain was the most frequent with 78.43%. The most common pain intensity was moderate with 60.55% (n = 674). Multimodal therapy was the most used in the treatment of pain with 51% (n = 567).
Conclusions: In the present study it was observed that the prevalence and incidence is similar to the adult patient. Our results disclose the extent of pain as a health problem in a tertiary pediatric hospital and may help to develop specific measures for their solution.
