Sexual Abuse Cases Detected with Play Therapy Among Children Referred to Psychology for Other Reasons

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Play therapy is based on this as a natural means of self-expression used by the child. It is an opportunity that is given to express their feelings and problems in the same sandbox.Material and Methods: Prospective observational study, conducted from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009 in children attending child psychology consulting. Inclusion criteria: They were referred for other reasons other than sexual abuse, i.e. enuresis, encopresis, poor school performance, aggression, phobias, tantrums and which through play therapy sessions continued in different diagnosis to be reached sexual abuse. Excluded: Those cases in which parents or guardians didn´t accept to participate in the study or who did not complete at least 5 sessions of play therapy, and those whose underlying problem was other than sexual abuse. For statistical analysis we used the Wilcoxon test and the binomial test.
Results: Of the total sample, 54 (60.7%) were male, this group 1 was sexually abused and 35 (39.3%) were women of whom four were victims of sexual abuse. The age group most affected was six years to eight years, according to the Monte Carlo test bedwetting, aggression, sex and age were significant in bilateral asymptotic form, and no encopresis (single sided) approximate value considering z (binomial test) statistically significant: with enuresis without encopresis, without aggression, without poor school performance, without phobias and without tantrums.
Conclusion: The use of play therapy in children presenting for causes other than sexual abuse has great assertiveness to diagnose them, raising this as a reliable method in psychological practice.
