ABSTRACT
Infections of the Central Nervous System (CNS) are among the
most difficult we face in terms of morbidity and mortality for a
patient. Therefore, they require precise and immediate diagnosis.
In this paper we review the most common infections of the central
nervous system and include an analysis about the study of the
cerebrospinal fluid and the concepts of septic meningitis and
aseptic meningitis. Although viral infections are more common,
bacterial meningitis is the one with the potential to cause a rapidly
deteriorating condition that the physician should be familiar with.
Viral encephalitis frequently accompanies viral meningitis and can
produce focal neurologic findings and cognitive difficulties that can
mimic other neurologic disorders. Other infectious diseases of the
central nervous system, such as those produced by prions are
explored in this review.
