ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the incidence and identify the risk factors associated to acute renal failure (ARF). Design: Case-control study. Setting: ICU of a general hospital in Merida, Yucatan (Mexico). Patients: Patients admitted to the ICU. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: Sixteen ARF (13 men, three women, mean age 43 ± 19.5 yrs, range 17-73 yrs) and 105 (47 men, 58 women, mean age 34.4 ± 18.2 yrs, range 15-90 yrs) non ARF patients were retrospectively indentified, matched and compared in age, gender, time period of acute illness before admission to the hospital, main illness, referring department and APACHE II Score at 24 hours in the ICU. Gender and APACHE II score were statistically significant for the development of ARF (p = 0.02 and 0.001 respectively). Conclusion: The incidence of ARF is low in our hospital. Male sex and the severity of illness were the most important risk factors associated to IRA in this study.
