ABSTRACT
Objective: To study the protective effects of L-carnitine in patients undergoing to open cardiac surgery.
Design: Controlled, double-blind study.
Setting: Cardiovascular postoperative ICU (UTIPX) of a tertiary care hospital, México City.
Patients: Thirty patients (group I, mean age 56.9 yrs) and twenty patients (group II, mean age 56.6 yrs) undergoing to cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
Interventions: Twelve hours before surgery group I received a placebo and group II 1 g of L-carnitine; an additional dose of placebo and L-carnitine was given at the beginning of CPB.
Measurements and main results: The use of drugs, anormal postoperative ECG’s, postoperative serum level of CPK, cardiac failure and postoperative complications were less important in the L-carnitine group (p 0.05).
Conclusion: L-carnitine reduces the deleterious conse-quences of CPB in patients undergoing to heart surgery.
