ABSTRACT
Neurocysticercosis (Nc) is a worldwide frequent cause of neurological disorders in some endemic areas. Our perception it is a diminished incidence, changes in its clinical presentation and treatment. Objective: herein, we present our 10 years experience on the Nc treatment at the Neurosurgery and Neurological Endovascular Therapy Service at the «Dr. José Eleuterio González» University Hospital. Patients and methods: we performed a retrospective study of all patients admitted to our hospital with Nc between October 2000 to October 2010. The data were obtained from the clinical and radiological files; those cases without a registered file where excluded. Epidemologic variables, like age and sex, and the most significative clinical findings were analyzed. Results: we included 99 patients 65 men and 34 women with a mean age of 45.9 years. A decrease on frequency of the Nc incidence through time was seen with statistical significance (pd» 0,001). The clinical presentation also showed variation mainly in seizures and clinical data of intracranial hypertension. Twenty six patients underwent a surgical procedure. Conclusion: the change in the frequency of the disease and its clinical presentation, are the result of multiple factors, in particular the actions undertaken by the National Health System in our country. The statistical analysis shows a clear trend in the decrease of Nc frequency; however, more national and international studies are needed to support this trend.REFERENCES
