ABSTRACT
The alert state (wakefulness) and physiological sleep are biological phenomena of vital importance in the human being. Neurobiological knowledge of these functions and their alterations will provide useful tools for a proper diagnosis, management and prognosis of the patient suffering such abnormalities. This is the first of a two parts revision of organic processes. It was conducted a literature search in the databases of Medline, Pubmed, Artemisa and LILACs from 1980 to 2012; for search were introduced the following words:
brain integrative functions, vegetative states,
minimally conscious states, disorders of consciousness, behavioral of consciousness. From hundred of publications were chosen reviews of authorities in the field and those with levels of evidence greater than 3. In addition, older classic texts and articles were included. The wakefulness and physiologic sleep are events with neurofunctional mechanisms more or less known, their dysfunction produces alterations in the state of alert and sleep disorders; its knowledge and proper assessment are indispensable in clinical practice.
