ABSTRACT
Introduction: Colonoscopy has become indispensable in certain intestinal diseases, even considered
a benchmark for setting specific treatments. The aim of this study is to describe the endoscopic
results found in 878 patients over a period of 53 months and knows the application fields and more
frequent diagnoses.
Material and methods: An observational, transversal and prospective study in patients who request
it colonoscopy between July 5, 2006 and December 31, 2010. The variables analyzed were age, gender,
endoscopic procedure used, hospital and specialty area requested, and shipping and colonoscopic
diagnosis.
Results: Eight hundred seventy-eight colonoscopies were performed during the study period. Fiftythree
point five percent (470) of the studies were conducted in female individuals and 46.5% (408) in
men, mean age was 50.7 years (range 5 to 88 years). The most frequent indication for the study was
gastrointestinal bleeding with 17%. The results was grossly normal in 36.4% (320) of patients. The
most frequent endoscopic diagnosis was hemorrhoid disease in 9.3% (82) of cases.
Discussion: The indications and endoscopic findings were similar to those reported in other series. In
the authors’ experience, colonoscopy has a high diagnostic index and is a safe procedure and that the
complication rate was less than 0.01%.
