ABSTRACT
A statistical report is presented of patients with adjuvant disease from the last three years in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of the Hospital General de México. We carried out research based on files from the «Dr. Fernando Ortiz Monasterio» Plastic Surgery Unit at the Hospital General de México, integrated by 177 patients: 128 (72.4%) females and 49 (27.6) males, between 17 and 73 years old with a mean of 39.5 years during the period from 2008 to 2011. The infiltrated region was distributed as follows: 95 patients (53.6%) in the buttocks, 52 (29.39%) in breasts, 16 (9.03%) in the legs, 9 (5.09%) in the face and 5 (2.89%) in the hip. The average time to show symptoms after the injection was 8.8 years, ranging between one and 30 years. 21 patients (11.86%) had an ulceration at the time of consultation, 42 (23.72%) underwent a surgical procedure among which lumbar perforator flaps for buttocks, reconstruction by mastectomy to remove infiltrated tissue covered with latissimus dorsi or TRAM flap over implants or not, and 135 (76.28%) only with medical handling. It is important to diagnose patients from their first contact and thereby, provide prompt medical treatment before complications given the natural history of the disease. Patients should receive close monitoring, explaining to them step by step the process of the illness. They should receive interdisciplinary handling. They must have a prognosis and be assessed whether they can be candidates for immediate reconstruction or should continue with medical treatment. Reconstruction in adjuvant disease patients with the use of autologous tissue shows fewer complications and better cosmetic results.
