ABSTRACT
To investigate the effectiveness of fine needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules, 671 specimens were evaluated and divided into 3 groups. Group A: the aspiration was performed by the clinician without pathologist advice. Group B: The aspiration was performed by a clinician with pathologist immediate evaluation of the specimen. Group C: the pathologist performed the aspiration and immediately evaluated the quality of the smear. Only 399 specimens were adequate for diagnosis. In Group C were obtained the best results with 17.8% of inadequate specimens, 100% of sensibility, 85% of specificity and 0% of false negative results. The assistance of the pathologist on site of performance and evaluation of fine needle aspiration biopsy significantly decreases the number of insufficient material for diagnosis.
