ABSTRACT
Background: A predictive model of breast cancer risk is
the Breast
Cancer Risk Assessment Tool (BCRAT), designed by scientists
at the National Cancer Institute. The objective was to determine
the risk of breast cancer (BC) through the BCRAT.
Methods: a descriptive, prospective, observational study was
done. We included 300 women over 35 years of age to who we
applied the BCRAT. We excluded women previously diagnosed
with BC.
Results: the predominant age range was 35-45 years with 43.3 %;
married 79.3 % and 56.3 % housewives, the respondents were
Hispanic population. The statistical analysis showed significant
age over 50 years and family background as major risk factors,
respectively (OR = 5.06,
p = 0.02) (OR = 27.75, p = 0.000), previous
breast biopsy increases the risk (OR = 5.3,
p = 0.009).
Conclusions: according to the literature, the results obtained
showed that sex, age over 50 years; family history and previous
conduct breast biopsy are the most important risk factors. According
to the BCRAT risk was determined by averaging 0.6 probabilities
to develop BC at five years in women over 35 years.
