ABSTRACT
Background: There is not a specific population at risk for appendicitis, the change in the population attending a hospital is a
unique opportunity to study differences in the presentation of different pathological entities.
Objective: To compare different variables of two types of populations (over health insurance and social security
ISSSTELEON) treated at the Hospital San Jose Tec de Monterrey with a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, confirmed by
ultrasound (USG) and Computed Tomography simple or proven (TC).
Methods: This study was observational and descriptive. We evaluated the records of patients admitted to hospital San José-
Tec de Monterrey, in which a diagnosis of acute appendicitis and was confirmed by ultrasound or CT Scan single or contrasted.
We included the population served one year before and one year after September 1, 2010, when he began to receive patients
ISSSTELEON.
Results: We compared two populations using the Student t test for independent samples and found no statistically significant
differences in the following categories: age, hospital stay, appendiceal diameter, leukocyte count, weight, height, body mass
index and temperature, obtaining values of p› 0.05 in all cases. The population in ISSSTELEON group was younger by two
years or so, about the personal family history and disease, had less history of cancer and diabetes and more heart, in your habits,
showed less susceptibility to smoking, the higher rate diabetic and hypertensive lower. Significant finding was demonstrated as
an increase in the proportion of patients with alcoholism from 21.2% to 35.8%, with p ‹0.05.
Conclusions: Changing population seen in our hospital was not associated with significant changes in the presentation and
factors associated with developing appendicitis. Projecting a higher level of alcohol consumption, and tendency to more
advanced stages in the natural history of appendicitis.
