ABSTRACT
Background: dentinal tissue has a high sensitivity to respond with pain to different stimuli, which is called dentin hypersensitivity and is framed within reversible states of vital pulp. Objective: To determine risk factors for dentin hypersensitivity in patients from 20 to 40 years old.
Methods: Descriptive case series study, conducted at the Emergencies Service of the Area 6 Dental Polyclinic in the municipality of Cienfuegos, from May 2008 to June 2009. It included all patients who attended the emergency service in this period, with symptoms of dentinal pain. Variables analyzed included: age, sex, causes of consultation and risk factors.
Results: females predominated (77, 5%) as well as ages between 36 and 40 years old (40%). Among this latter, the presence of hyperesthesia was more frequent. The risk factor that prevailed was gingival recession (67, 5%) and was also more frequent in the group of 36 to 40 years old. The type of diet as a risk factor was present in 60, 8% of cases. Vigorous brushing type predominated with 42, 5%.
Conclusions: The gingival recession and the type of diet were the main risk factors for dentin hypersensitivity.
